Biosen glucose analyzers

The Biosen series of glucose and lactate analyzers include three different models and are a familiar brand name in laboratories and diabetes clinics.

Biosen analyzers use a special chip sensor technology to deliver fast measurement and high accuracy at a low cost per test.

Due to the long life of the sensor chip the system requires little maintenance and features such as the touch screen and large memory add to Biosen analyzer’s user-friendliness.

All Biosen analyzers are supplied with interface to connect to hospital or lab information systems (LIS). An integrated barcode reader and printer are also available with most configurations.

Biosen can measure blood, plasma or serum can be used to provide glucose and lactate measurements with excellent precision (less than >2% CV) over a wide measurement range.

Biosen analyzers can be ordered as a one or two channel system allowing measurements of either glucose or lactate, or both, in each of the following models:

  • Biosen C-Line GP+ : Up to 5 samples
  • Biosen C-Line Clinic : Up to 20 samples
  • Biosen S-Line Lab+ : Up to 63 samples

Specifications

  • Touch screen
  • Multilingual display
  • Results in 2025 seconds
  • Up to 160 results an hour
  • Measuring from whole blood, plasma and serum
  • Automatic calibration
  • High precision  CV 1.5 % at 12 mmol/l
  • Measuring range 0.5 - 50 mmol/L for glucose and 0.5 - 40 mmol/L for lactate

Glucose testing

Glucose is the primary fuel for the brain and muscles. Because the brain is very sensitive to shortages, there are a number of control mechanisms in the body which tend to keep the blood glucose level constant. Excess glucose is either converted by the liver and muscle cells into glycogen, or turned into body fat.

EKF's glucose analyzers are widely used in diabetes management. In 2011 the estimated number of adults living with diabetes was 366 million, representing 8.3% of the global adult population. This number is projected to increase to 522 million people in 2030.

With blood glucose being the key parameter for acute diabetes control and for diagnosis - besides HbA1c - there is a clear need for a simple, robust and accurate glucose analyzer.  EKF´s Biosen analyzer meets this demand and is suited to diabetes clinics and hospital labs where there is a high demand for highly accurate glucose tests at lab quality.

The measurement of glucose is the basis of several diagnostic tests for diabetes such as fasting glucose level, postprandial glucose level (non-fasting) and Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT).

For hospital admitted patients with diabetes the use of Biosen glucose analysers is preferred over test strips in many places since the costs per test are lower and the results are provided in diagnostic quality.

Methodology

The measurement of glucose on Biosen analyzers is based on an electrochemical principle. The sample is precisely taken up by the user with a 20 µl end-to-end capillary and transferred into the EKF safe-lock cup prefilled with 1 ml of hemolysis solution.

The cup is then closed and gently shaken for mixture and hemolysis of the sample. After insertion into the analyser the sample is automatically taken up and moved to the sensor(s).

Here the ß-D glucose / L-lactate contained in the sample, is converted enzymatically with the help of the immobilised enzyme glucose oxidase / lactate oxidase on the chip sensor. The H2O2 generated by the reaction is detected at the electrode. The amperometric signal (sensor current) is proportional to the glucose/lactate concentration in the sample. Following a short flush the system is ready for the next measurement.

The Biosen analysers are calibrated automatically with a solution of known concentration (EKF Multistandard). Efficient calibration schemes can be selected by the user.

EKF provides a complete range of test solutions for quality control to meet the standards of quality management. Separate quality control (QC) positions are available besides the regular sample positions for automated QC measurement and storage as QC results in the data memory (on all models except Biosen C-Line Sport).

A STAT position ensures that emergency samples can be analysed immediately at any time.

Ganka Pavlova
EKF Distributor in Bulgaria

“We distribute the Hemo Control product in Peru and we find it to be a very reliable, resistance and versatile product that works brilliantly for us.  Peru is a country of difficult geography and our teams have had to endure extreme cold, unbearable heat and vast differences in altitude (from sea-level right up to 4,500 meters). The Hemo Control analyzers are installed in sea-level establishments operating in temperatures over 35°C and in the mountains, at more than 4,500 meters above sea level at far lower temperatures. We also have establishments in the jungle, with the Hemo Control operating in the hot and humid climate”
