Executive Directors

Julian Baines, Executive Chairman

Julian rejoined the executive team at EKF Diagnostics Holdings plc ("EKF") as Executive Chairman on a short term basis as announced in early February 2023. Julian is also currently Non-Executive Chairman of Verici Dx plc. Julian has significant experience in the life science industry. He has over 20 years' experience as CEO of EKF and BBI Holdings plc. Before joining EKF, he undertook a management buyout at BBI in 2000, a flotation on AIM in 2004 and was responsible for selling the business to Alere Inc. (now part of Abbott Laboratories) in 2008 for c. £85 million. Whilst CEO at EKF he successfully completed a number of fund raisings, acquisitions and subsequent integration of businesses in seven countries. He oversaw the spin out of businesses from EKF including Renalytix plc which listed on Nasdaq in 2020. In 2016 he was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) for services to the life sciences industry. Julian has previously held the position of Non-Executive Chairman of Renalytix Plc between 2018 and 2020.

 

Stephen Young, Chief Financial Officer

Stephen is an experienced Finance Director and CFO and joins EKF Diagnostics from Trellus Health plc ("Trellus") where he has served as Interim Chief Financial Officer, in a non-board capacity, since August 2022. Prior to working with Trellus, Stephen served as CFO and Company Secretary (a non-director role) with Axiom Manufacturing Limited, a contract electronic manufacturer. Having joined in 2009 when Axiom generated close to £12m in revenue and was loss-making, he supported the restructuring of the business to over £62m turnover in 2020. Axiom also acquired Greeve Limited in 2016 where Stephen became a Director. In addition to this, Stephen has experience with AIM-quoted businesses having served as CFO at Pure Wafer plc and, before this, BBI Holdings plc ("BBI") which admitted to AIM in 2004. During Stephen's seven-year tenure at BBI he reported to EKF Executive Chair Julian Baines when he was CEO of BBI. Stephen is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

Non-Executive Directors

Christopher Mills, Non-Executive Director

Christopher founded Harwood Capital Management in 2011, a successor to its former parent company J.O. Hambro Capital Management, which he co-founded in 1993. He is Chief Executive and Investment Manager of North Atlantic Smaller Companies Investment Trust plc and Chief Investment Officer of Harwood Capital LLP. He is a Non-Executive Director of a number of companies including Renalytix AI plc. Christopher was a Director of Invesco MIM, where he was Head of North American Investments and Venture Capital, and of Samuel Montagu International.

 

Christian Rigg, Senior Independent Non-Executive Director

Chris Rigg has significant executive experience at both public and private companies. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Mandata Holdings Limited and a Non-Executive Director of the main market listed Sportech plc. Chris previously held the positions of Chief Financial Officer and latterly Chief Executive Officer at Quantum Pharma plc, which, under his stewardship, was refinanced and implemented a new strategy facilitating growth and leading to its acquisition by Clinigen Group plc for an enterprise value of £160 million.

Jenny Winter, Non-Executive Director

Jenny has over 20 years’ experience across a broad variety of healthcare organisations ranging from small not-for-profit companies to large corporates. Jenny is currently Chief Executive Officer of AIM listed Animalcare Group plc (AIM: ANCR) where she is successfully executing on the business’s long-term growth strategy, as reflected in the recently announced strong full year trading performance against a backdrop of very challenging market conditions. Jenny has a science-led career spanning R&D, clinical research, strategic product development and commercial growth across various aspects of the healthcare industry. Before joining Animalcare Group plc in October 2018, Jenny was Vice President of Respiratory products – Global Supply Chain and Strategy at AstraZeneca, a position she held from 2015. Other roles at AstraZeneca included Vice President Cardiology – Global Product and Portfolio Strategy, Commercial Director – Eastern Europe, Marketing Company President Hungary, where she led a major change programme to drive future success, and Global Vice President, Group Public Affairs. Jenny has also been CEO of the charity Barretstown, transforming it into a successful leading charity  which provides therapeutic recreation programmes for children and their families affected by serious illness, as well as virtual school and hospital outreach activities. Her work at the charity resulted in her being invited by Barretstown board member Dermot Gleeson, Chairman of Allied Irish Bank, to join the Board of the bank as a Non-executive Director, a role she held from 2004 to 2010. Jenny is also Chairman of a charity – Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital Charity, an NHS charity supporting the local hospitals. 

  

Jenny has a BSc in Physiology and Pharmacology from the University of Southampton.
